Ministry of Transport Said Discussions On Singapore-Johor Bahru Link Project Can Be Finalised By End-July

Singapore revealed optimism that assessments related to the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project might be concluded by the end of July, reported Channel News Asia (CNA).

“Like Malaysia, we are optimistic that the examinations on the outstanding matters can be concluded by the 31 July deadline,” a speaker for the Ministry of Transport (MOT) informed CNA.

This comes as Singapore and Malaysia have been engaged in “extensive review” over the RTS Link campaign, stated the ministry.

Works on the RTS Link, which was primarily set for completion by 2024, has subsequently been suspended.

The suspension had actually been prolonged 3 times at the request of Malaysia. The latest extension was because of the enforcement of the “breaker” measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 in Singapore along with Malaysia’s movement control order.

The RTS link will also be connected to the Woodlands North MRT station on the Thomson-East Coast Line.

Johor’s Chief Minister Hasni Mohammad reportedly forecasts the job to commence work in November.

According to him, both states are set to sign the contract on the job by end-July, reported The Star.

Malaysian Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong also claimed it will wait for the city-state’s brand-new Cabinet to form, considered that Singapore’s General Election have been finished over the weekend.

“If we are able to conclude the negotiations next week, the time would have come for us to seal the agreement. We must do all this before the 31 July due date,” stated Wee.

To link Woodlands in Singapore to Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru, the RTS Link will serve around 10,000 commuters per hour each way, assisting ease traffic jam on the Causeway.
